07.1 Magnitude sensitivity for homogeneous model: 1-km DAS array benchmark#
This is an example of computing magnitude sensitivity for a homogeneous model.
It reproduces the homogeneous benchmark of a downhole DAS monitoring study: a 1-km-long vertical fibre with a constant noise level, used to isolate the effect of the DAS directional sensitivity before any velocity structure is introduced.
Test case 7:
Geometry: 1-km-long DAS cable in a vertical borehole, 1 m channel spacing, so 1000 channels between 1 m and 1000 m depth
Data: constant strain-rate noise level of 1.95e-9 1/s on every channel, gauge length of 10 m
Velocity model: homogeneous, Vp = 2370 m/s, Vp/Vs = 2 (so Vs = 1185 m/s), Qp = Qs = 100, rho = 2500 kg/m^3
Processing: magnitude sensitivity on a vertical section through the well, requiring detection on at least 60 channels with a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 2, for P-waves, S-waves and both together.
Three features of the resulting sections are worth looking for, and all three follow from the fact that a DAS cable only records the strain component along the fibre:
The minimum detectable magnitude grows with offset from the monitoring well.
P-wave sensitivity is worst near the mid-depth of the array, but only at offsets beyond half the array length, where the ray direction that a vertical fibre records best is no longer available anywhere along the cable.
S-wave sensitivity degrades below the array, and vanishes on the cable axis itself, where the S-wave polarization is perpendicular to the fibre.

The sensitivity is worst at the mid-depth of the array, and that loss only appears at offsets larger than half the array length.

Plot magnitude sensitivity for S wave#
The S-wave polarization is perpendicular to the fibre on the cable axis, so the cable cannot record an S-wave arriving from directly below it.

Plot magnitude sensitivity for P and S waves#
Requiring both phases takes the worse of the two, so this panel inherits the P-wave loss at mid-depth and the S-wave loss below the array.
_ = pndvis.sensitivity.plot_sensitivity_slice(sens_data=Y_slice_mag_sens_ps, xi=gx, zi=gz,
